What a great lineup this year at CEFF. The opening night lineup is really impressive and probably the best set of films we’ve been able to show to open our festival. We’re going to start with a great short film, ”Scars of Freedom,”  by filmmaker Celine Cousteau, that talks about the repercussions of human negligence juxtaposed with the incredible power of human compassion. Beautiful images of humpbacks swimming through the protected blue waters off Hawaii offer a contrast to the story.  The film ends with a powerful statement that “change begins with the heart.”

Four decades ago, working with the country's top photojournalists, EPA created DOCUMERICA. It remains today as a collective picture of our environment and lives when EPA's work was just beginning. Now with State of the Environment, we have a modern and global call open for photos of the same intent.

One of the films in this year’s festival is Green Fire, Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for our Time which will be playing on February 24th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm.  I hope you will discover that Aldo Leopold spoke often about building a community; of the land, soils, plants, animals and people. Drawing on his life-long study of ecology, land use, history, and ethics, Leopold concluded that the highest task of civilization was to figure out how ‘to live on a piece of land without spoiling it.’
